AVALON BEACH IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION, INC. (ABIA) Minutes of the ABIA Annual Meeting held 5/1/2010, The annual meeting of the ABIA was opened by Co-President, Chuck Ball, at 7:00 pm on May 1,2010. There were 21 members present. Chuck expressed his appreciation to Lesley for her service to the organization for the past 8 years. Chuck also recognized Chip Kendrick for his devoted time to the routine maintenance of the oceanfront lot. Several members formed a work party at the ocean lot at 8:00 am this date to do necessary clean-up and landscaping. Due to the workers’ ages, new sand fence will be installed by some younger men with the oversight of Chip. More fencing will help keep the dune in place. Terry Zeytoonian volunteered to purchase and plant 2 dozen Pampas Grass plants, between the sand fence on either side of the stairs. The cost will be approximately $240 plus the cost of some top soil and much. Chip volunteered to help with the project and would hire some neighbor young men to help with the planting. Members approved. Treasurer’s Report: Carol Sterner gave the following report: Beginning Balance: $8,730.49; Deposits: $ 5,875.00; Expenses: $ 4,392.99; Balance as of 4/30/2010: $10,212.50. Chuck stated that the insurance premium rates for this next year would be considerably higher which will be an added expense. Old Business: Last year’s picnic was a great success, with plenty of good food (from Saul’s) and good fellowship with those attending. Chris and Carol Sterner graciously opened their home so we were out of the weather for the second time. Thanks very much. This year, the picnic will again be held at their home, 2039 New Bern St on Sat. Oct.16, 2010 at 1 pm. The event is opened to all paid members of the Association. Each family is asked to bring a side dish or dessert. For planning purposes, please contact Chris & Carol (480-0738) with your RSVP one week IN ADVANCE. New Business: Open discussion of several topics, such as: The mailing of the newsletter versus notifying members via email due to the cost of postage. Several ideas & suggestion were discussed. Sandie Markland volunteered to absorb some of the cost for mailing as a personal expense. It was agreed the process needs to be streamlined for next year. Parking, paving and towing was discussed. Only three people are authorized to make calls for towing. This is to keep the confusion to a minimum with the towing company and the police. No vehicle has been towed from the lot in the past years. It is the right of any member to approach any person whose vehicle does not display the current parking pass or to leave a note on the vehicle stating a parking pass is needed and the lot is private property. Random beach patrol will be in force this year. There will be no police officer at the ocean lot on Memorial weekend this year. Anyone interested in setting up a tent for information or to monitor the lot is welcome to do so. A notice stating how and where to obtain a parking pass was posted at the lot. Howard Kimble and Chuck will check with the town and CAMA to see if there is some kind of paving or filling that can be done to the lot to provide more spaces. Carol asked about replacing the steps with a ramp. Again, this would involve permits from CAMA, more liability insurance from the assoc. and would probably extend off the association’s property. Association activities and the announcement of the annual meeting are to be published in the local newspaper. The new parking passes for this are NEON PINK!! As of this date, 145 passes have been issued, compared to the overall number issued last year of 270. The number is expected to increase this month before full vacation season starts next month. New officers were elected. They are as follows: President: Sandie Markland; Doris Kimble, Secretary, ABIA |
